Jun 08, 2008 • Japanese School Lunch

Please note that an American menu will not be provided for comparison because of summer vacation.

At some point, the “fish with the head still on” will come up. Generally, kids are forced to eat it (or cry until they do) but as a teacher and a foreigner, I get the option of not eating the head or not eating it at all. I opted for the latter and a boy was very grateful to have extra fish. The children seem to genuinely care about each other but if you’re absent during lunch, they like you more because it means more food for them.

One particularly gross thing was when one of the girls poked out the fish eyeball on her chopstick and held it up for people to see. I don’t think she ate it. That was about the time I offered my fish up for anyone else.

Japanese Menu

Barley rice
Seaweed soup
Chop suey
Potato salad
Milk

Other Notes
This is actually the first time I’ve had chop suey…a dish invented in the US.

Japanese Menu

Barley rice
Daikon and miso soup
Nanban fried char
Seaweed salad
Milk

Other Notes
Char is apparently one of those good fish for the environment, the ones that require a lot of food or have devastating fish farms. Eat more char!

Japanese Menu

Bread roll
Clam chowder
Marinated chicken
Orange
Milk

Other Notes
Handmade clam chowder is so much better than the stuff in the can…you get real, whole clam meat.

Japanese Menu

Barley rice
Mapo dofu
Steamed gyoza
Chinese-style salad
Milk

Other Notes
This is the second “set” ethnic lunch - the other substitutes an egg roll for the gyoza. Personally, I like the gyoza better because it’s less greasy in an already greasy meal.

IIIIIII HAAAAAAAAAAAAATE FIIIIIIIISH!

Wow, I’ve not seen a fish eyeball in ages… My family members back home would always be fighting over the right to crunch on them…

Is it just me, or are the portions shrinking?

@issa-sa: The small ones I can do but these…a little too large.

@double: Nope, the portions are pretty much the same. The meat portion varies the most though and I think it depends on the overall calories in the rest of the dishes.
