Jun 29, 2008 • Japanese School Lunch

Please note that an American menu will not be provided for comparison because of summer vacation.

I am so behind on the Japanese school lunch project! Anyway, there was a new soup that I have never had before: bean pot-au-feu. Getting the translation took a few seconds…it’s hard enough trying to katakana-ize the English and even more difficult in a language I can’t remember!

This is basically a beef and vegetable soup except they’ve substituted beans and small scraps of bacon for the beef. The result is a rather tasteless and bland soup. I also suspect that overcooked beans that were nearly mush didn’t help. The real version looks much more delicious.

Japanese Menu

Cheese bread
Bean pot-au-feu
Omelet with meat sauce
Broccoli
Fruit and jelly mix
Milk

Other Notes
The kids weren’t so happy with the cheese bread…there was no cheese inside it, nor was there cheese on the top. There wasn’t even a cheese flavor! I wonder if the lunch center messed this one up.

Japanese Menu

Barley rice
Pork curry
pickles
Tofu salad
Milk

Other Notes
Standard curry lunch…except this time, there was too much curry and the kids couldn’t finish it all. This is rather rare.

Japanese Menu

Bread roll
Egg soup
Yakisoba
Soybeans and crunchy, dried sardines
Milk

Other Notes
I really like those small sardines, despite the aversion to eyes and tail. They’re sweet and nutty.

Japanese Menu

Seaweed rice
Kenchin soup
Salt-grilled trout
Sesame and spinach salad
Milk

Other Notes
Kenchin soup is from the Buddhist diet…it’s tasty but not my first choice.
