Sweet Potato Ice Cream

Jun 24, 2008 • Snacks

Sweet potato ice creamThere’s a new soft serve machine in a convenience store about 30 minutes away. Normally, this wouldn’t catch my interest except it has 33 flavors of soft serve, including some strange flavors, even by Japanese standards. I plan on trying all the new flavors this summer (and also working on an exercise plan!).

The other day, I had satsumaimo, or sweet potato, soft serve. I was expecting something purple, due to the skins, but I guess that during the making, the skins were removed (or it’s entirely artificial). In any case, sweet potato soft serve is quite delicious, almost like a mellow, less fruity peach. It is significantly less sweet than fruit flavors, which may put some people off. It should also be noted that there aren’t any chunks of sweet potato in this, like you would find in a fruit-based ice cream.

What will Japan think of next?! Sweet Potato Ice Cream looks AND sounds legit!

Exercise plan? You know whats even more legit than Sweet Potato? (no, not Couch Potatoes!) WII-FIT!!!… well, to be honest, I haven’t tried it myself (because its sold out everywhere… :( ), but it is an alternative! =3

mmm, sounds tasty. I love sweet potato

sounds really yummy!
i don’t usually like sweet potato, but you make it seem pretty pleasant.

Satsumoimo doesn’t strike me as very fruity at all. I can sort of imagine the taste (tried some satsumaimo Pocky-like things from a friend), though not how it would be coupled with the soft texture of the ice-cream since I’ve only ever had sweet potato in solid form.
33 flavours??? Why is it the nearest convenience store only has the traditional vanilla/strawberry/chocolate/macha????

33? I can’t even head to to my local Mc Donald’s and get my chocolate flavor; they’re always out.

mhmmmm….

@Jesus159159159: I’m addicted to the Wii too!

@issa-sa: It was a pleasant surprise. This store is special…it’s a family-run operation coupled with a convenience store. I love going into non-chain stores.

I had this in Kamakura, where apparently sweet potato products are one of the omiyage (besides senbei). I’m not a sweet potato person but the ice cream was great (despite it being a rainy winter day!)
