Jul 03, 2008 • Japanese School Lunch
Please note that an American menu will not be provided for comparison because of summer vacation.
Still catching up on the backlog of lunches. Fruit is starting to enter the menu more and more, probably as summer approaches and prices get cheaper. I really like this because we rarely get dessert, unlike one of my friends, so this is as close as it gets.
My favorite one was probably bibinba, the Korean dish. There’s a local restaurant that makes it really well - this school lunch version, while tasty, is a poor comparison. Some of the kids have a hard time eating this because the meat makes the rice harder to pick up with chopsticks…in the restaurant, you at least get a spoon.

Some kids were absent today so we all got a little extra salad and soup.

I tried to find out what, exactly, aurora sauce was, but failed. If you know, please tell me. It’s pretty tasty too.

Bibinba is actually a Korean dish that is loved by Japan. I wish they included kimchi as well but no such luck.

Cream stew is more like a cream soup…not sure why it’s called stew.

The seaweed salad had little fish in it. I can deal with them when they’re dried, crunchy, and coated in a sweet sauce but when they’re raw, they’re slimy, like overcooked noodles. Gross.

Hmm, my cafeteria serves stuff with aurora sauce too but I’ve yet to figure it out myself.
OMG, bibimba(p)! Absolutely love the dish, especially when it comes in the hot stone bowl :D
