Japanese School Lunch: Week 14

Sep 23 2008 • Japanese School Lunch

Please note that the American menu provided is from my middle school in the US. It is meant to serve as a comparison.

I’m getting a little sick of the “ethnic” lunches. For starters, they tend to only be Chinese or Korean food and while the taste is alright, it’s the same taste over and over again. Mapo tofu tends to get served with either gyoza or an eggroll and the Korean bibinba uses the same array of ingredients. I know there’s far more to those cuisines that can be made cheaply and palatable for kids!1

Rice
Seaweed and mushroom soup
Tempura vegetables
Hard-boiled egg, half
Banana

Labor Day - No School

Other Notes
The cafeteria lady made about two times this amount of food so everyone got extras. This is very rare.

Apple jam
Harusame soup
Fried tofu with chili sauce
Lemon-vinegar daikon salad

Hamburger steak with gravy
Mashed potatoes

Other Notes
Half the teachers were absent today so everyone got extras. Normally, you get 6-8 pieces of tofu butyou can see the plate’s stacked high. I couldn’t eat my bread and dragged it home for later.

Barley rice
Potato and minced chicken soup
Mackerel with miso
Bean sprouts with sesame and soy sauce
Milk

Corn dog nuggets
Mixed vegetables
Baked apples
Graham crackers
Milk

Other Notes
As much as I love this school lunch, I really wouldn’t mind some baked apples. They’re not that unhealthy, right?

Apple bread
Tomato and egg soup
Vegetable croquette
Cabbage and corn salad
Milk

Steak and cheese on a sub roll
Lettuce
Pickle
Oven fries
Peaches
Milk

Other Notes
This was one time the bread company screwed up. My bread and another kid’s bread was definitely not apple bread and more oever, squashed flat. It’s hard to tell from the picture but it’s only slightly thicker than a pancake. Not delicious.

I’m not sure exactly what makes the salad a Chinese-style salad but that’s what the menu says….
  1. That would be not too spicy or not using strange ingredients that might still move. []

I can tell that bread is squashed. I’ve had squashed bread and it’s much too dense for enjoyment.

WTF there is no such thing as a Chinese-styled salad. They liez to you. Beware they may have added poison in it.

Mmm, Sept 2 fried tofu :)

@Panther: Sure, Chinese-style salad is possible. The whole US version of Chinese take out is practically Chinese-style food. Why not salad?

I think what Panther means is that ‘Chinese-styled’ stuff =/= Chinese stuff. The salad looks ‘Korean-styled’ actually (I’m just waiting for someone who knows Korean food to pick that statement :P).
I know it might get tiresome to have rice every meal hence the bread, but sometimes the bread looks so out of place with the rest of the dishes to me :S

@issa-sa: I agree…most of the meals that are “Western” style really aren’t. I’ve heard rumors that next year, they’re going to stop bread production completely because their bread machines are old and it would be too expensive to replace them. :(
