Japanese School Lunch: Week 16

Oct 10 2008 • Japanese School Lunch

Please note that the American menu provided is from my middle school in the US. It is meant to serve as a comparison.

I am so behind on this project again! Monday was a national holiday for Japan so there was no school. I feel this week was fairly typical, in terms of variety, and much more delicious than the previous week. I’m really addicted to the flavor combination of spinach and sesame - I know that’s one dish I’ll be taking back to the US with me.

White bread
Mushroom soup
Chinese-style chicken and potato
Fruit and yogurt mix
Milk

Turkey and cheese sandwich
Celery stick with dip
Peaches
Doritos
Milk

Other Notes
The Japanese lunch is one I’ve had before but I have to question the US menu…is it really just celery stick, in the singular? As in just 1 celery stick?

Barley rice
Pork curry
Soy-marinated pickles
Kamikami salad
Milk

Hot dog on bun
Macaroni and cheese
Baked beans
Banana
Milk

Other Notes
Pretty standard curry set. I suppose after this long, I can pretty much guess what they’ll serve after seeing the main dish.

Sesame bread
Western-style oden
Pumpkin gratin
Frozen pineapple
Milk

Tuna salad on croissant
Pickle spear
Grapes
Goldfish
Milk

Other Notes
The teachers all agreed that the pumpking gratin was less than appetizing. It was basically mashed pumpkin with some leathery cheese on top. Not good eats.

Onigiri
Kenchin soup
Fried hoki
Spinach and sesame salad
Milk

Chicken nuggets
Mixed greens
Mandarin oranges
Roll
Milk

Other Notes
I made that onigiri and I’m not proud of it. It got squashed in my backpack so there’s a faint wallet impression in it. The kids, with their little bundles lovingly prepared by their mothers, thought it was funny.

pooor onigiri かわいそう ~_~I like Friday’s menu the best btw.

Only one little onigiri?
Plain?Sesame?Fish?Umeboshi?

That week looked pretty good except for the pumpin gratin.

*droools*

I guess it’s not too late for another midnight snake ;D

Japanese school lunches always look balanced with a nice variety. A squashed onigiri is fine as long as it’s made with love!

Ah I notice something.

Since the main dishes change from time to time, it’ll be great that the drinks change too. Perhaps that little packet of milk for a small packet of 100% pure fresh orange juice? The kids might like it. (:

@Ryan A: I also like Friday’s menu - the taste of that fish is absolutely delicious.

@Blowfish: It was cheese, if I remember correctly. I didn’t have any umeboshi and I didn’t feel like cracking open a can of tuna.

@Yamcha: Well, because I made it, there was no love there. It was just a matter of making it quickly so I could get to work on time. I’m not a morning person, no matter how early I go to bed.

@Hynavian: I think it would be nice but drinking orange juice isn’t big over here. It’s seen as a sugary drink, like soda, so I don’t think the school lunch system would promote it.

Caitlin, I love these 給食 posts!

They always make me really hungry, haha.
