Japanese School Lunch: Week 19

Nov 21 2008 • Japanese School Lunch

Please note that the American menu provided is from my middle school in the US. It is meant to serve as a comparison.

One of the things that annoys me about Japanese school lunch is that sometimes, the lunch center doesn’t get the utensils right with the food. I’ve eaten cream-based soups, pork and beans, and yogurt with chopsticks and even for the kids and teachers, it’s a real struggle. Why can’t we have more than 1 eating utensil?!

Rice
Tofu and spinach soup
Marinated mackerel
Yogurt
Barley tea

Domino’s pizza
Peas
Orange wedges
Soft pretzel
Milk

Other Notes
I forgot to make rice the night before, so I had to take the small amount of leftover rice. Once again, I got a lecture from the kids about not using the right bento.

Brown bread
Seaweed soup
Chicken with aurora sauce
Spinach and corn salad
Milk

Fish treasures
Corn
Mixed fruit
Roll
Milk

Other Notes
Corn salad is one of the cruelest foods for chopstick loving nations. There’s really no other way to eat it than to just shovel it into your mouth.

Barley rice
Potato and seaweed miso soup
Salt-grilled Arabesque greenling
Harusame salad
Milk

Corn dog nuggets
Broccoli
Apple
Cookie
Milk

Other Notes
Just a quick note about corn dogs - Japanese call them American dogs. Do any other countries claim to have made corn dogs or are they really American?

Azuki bread
Mixed udon
Shrimp and vegetable fritter
Koumatsuna salad

Chicken sticks
Green beans
Pears
Roll
Milk

Other Notes
The way to eat this is to put the fried shrimp and vegetables into the udon. It soaks up soup and gets soft.

Fillet cutlet with sauce
Boiled vegetables
Sautéed dried daikon

Hamburger on a bun with cheese
Baked beans
Peaches

Other Notes
Sautéed dried daikon is really delicious. I don’t know if this is one of the dishes I’ll be able to take back to the US with me - where can you buy dried daikon?

mmmm, Azuki bread :)

Demzon

I’ve seen 大根 in not only the Asian markets, like H-Mart and Pacific Mercantile for me locally, but it has been appearing in general market grocery stores as well. I’m in the Denver area, so I’ve seen it as King Soopers, but not at Safeway yet. I don’t go to Safeway as much so it would be easily missed by me.
You will likely be drying it yourself though as I’ve only seen it as-is/raw. I just came across this today, I’ll have to show my son when her gets home from school as he doesn’t believe me on allot of the foods and student responsibilities.

@Ryan A: Azuki bread is good but not as good as it could be. I’m tempted to try making an oatmeal raisin azuki cookie though.

@Demzon: Thanks so much! I’m originally from a small town in the US but will be moving to a larger city when I return so I will check out the supermarkets for daikon. I know to dry it, you just hang it outside and let weather turn it into vegggie leather but I don’t know if the climates are compatible. Maybe I can slow roast it in the oven or something. Glad you found my site useful and thanks for stopping by!

It always strikes me that kids who grow up on these Japanese school lunches will probably live way longer than those on the American diet… Oh and apparently aurora sauce is a mixture of mayonnaise and ketchup (I hope this information is wrong since me no like ketchup XD)?
