Japanese School Lunch: Week 21

Nov 24 2008 • Japanese School Lunch

Please note that the American menu provided is from my middle school in the US. It is meant to serve as a comparison.

I was supposed to go to a school on Monday but we got our schedules mixed up and the Japanese Teacher of English didn’t realize it before it too late. I stayed back at the main office, eating a bento. Other than that, I realized that I haven’t had lima beans in years, probably since I stopped eating US school lunch. I actually feel somewhat nostalgic for those canned horrible things.

Carrot bread
Chive and egg soup
Potato croquette
Roasted vegetables
Milk

Spaghetti with meat sauce
Green beans
Cinnamon applesauce
Roll
Milk

Other Notes
Potato croquette is pretty bland. Most of the time there’s something like meat or vegetable in there but just potato is not delicious at all.

Other Notes
When I first came here, I really liked hijiki. Now, I’m not so sure. It feels very chalky and a little leathery at times. It’s a really weird seaweed.

Lima beans eeh? Those are really good if you can get fresh and green. Somewhat like edamame I guess. ^^

@Ryan A: I…don’t think I’ve ever had fresh lima beans…. I’m not from a lima bean eating household!

The hijiki in the picture looks a bit longer than what we usually have in our cafeteria… which I’ve learnt not to like at all (kinpira gobou is so much more yummier :P)

I’ve always wanted to know what exactly lima beans are, I always hear it as a stereotypical hated item in western households, though I have this feeling we probably have it in a more delicious form around these parts just under a different name…

@issa-sa: Yeah, the grocery’s version has shorter strings of hijiki. But their version of the salad tasted strange, not the same as the school lunch.

Lima beans are really plain, by themselves. They’re a light green color and if they’re from the can, they’re slimy sometimes.
